SUMMARY:The Root Experience
DESCRIPTION:The Root Experience is a 2-night festival centering BIPOC talent from various cultures and artistic disciplines. \n\n\n\nOur festival features BIPOC creatives at the center of art\, music\, and film. This type of platform does not currently exist in Spokane\, and that’s more than a shame – it’s unacceptable. The Root Experience celebrates regional filmmakers\, artists\, dancers\, culture bearers\, musicians\, and the intergenerational stories they weave through their art. The goal is to uplift their narratives of culture\, family\, beauty\, and resilience to create a network that empowers living stories and heals elements of the past. \n\n\n\nSchedule: https://www.therootexperience.org/schedule-2023

SUMMARY:Jewish Cultural Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Spokane Area Jewish Family Services is pleased to present our 18th annual Spokane Jewish Cultural Film Festival! Since 2005\, JFS has brought international films to Spokane that share Jewish life and culture with the community. Our upcoming festival\, however\, will be unprecedented: We’re going hybrid!  \n\n\n\nThe festival will take place Feb. 17-27\, 2022\, and will be presented in a “hybrid” format\, provided COVID-19 conditions at the time allow for it. This means opening and closing screenings in person (with precautions in place) at Wolff Auditorium (in Gonzaga University’s Jepson Center) as well as virtual access to all films and numerous programs (such as filmmaker Q&As). It is worth noting that most films in the festival are geoblocked (geographically restricted)\, as required by the distributors\, to the Greater Spokane Area (Spokane-Coeur d’Alene metro\, Stevens County\, the Palouse). If you are unsure about whether your location falls within the GSA\, please don’t hesitate to ask. We can make a limited number of geoblocking exceptions\, on most films\, for family members of GSA residents whose live elsewhere. And the screening package that includes American Birthright and A Jew Walks Into a Bar is not currently geoblocked.

SUMMARY:Best of the Fest – The Guardians
DESCRIPTION:When Rudy and Rennie North retired in Las Vegas\, the couple looked forward to their golden years in their own home. They didn’t expect a state-appointed guardian to control their life savings and separate them from their daughter. Kidnapped from their home and drugged\, they immediately lost their freedom to a stranger. \nDirector Billie Mintz exposes a shockingly corrupt system\, fueled by greed\, that has targeted Baby Boomer wealth. His relentless investigation makes him an advocate and ally\, following numerous families who are fighting to free their parents and bring justice to those who have abused a vulnerable population. Untangling a web of deceit\, it becomes clear there are many more whose voices have been silenced. As an unprecedented portion of the population are about to become senior citizens\, the perils of government programs meant to care for the elderly are brought into sharp focus in this unsettling cautionary tale. \n(Billie Mintz\, Canada\, 104 min) \nFree admission \nScreens with: \nDignity of Risk \nProf Joe\, a geriatrician\, is faced with a difficult decision when he finds that his elderly patient\, Mr Jones\, can no longer live safely at home.\n\n(Prateek Bandopadhayay\, Jeremy Ley\, and Joseph Ibrahim\, Australia\, 15 min)
