SUMMARY:The Root Experience
DESCRIPTION:The Root Experience is a 2-night festival centering BIPOC talent from various cultures and artistic disciplines. \n\n\n\nOur festival features BIPOC creatives at the center of art\, music\, and film. This type of platform does not currently exist in Spokane\, and that’s more than a shame – it’s unacceptable. The Root Experience celebrates regional filmmakers\, artists\, dancers\, culture bearers\, musicians\, and the intergenerational stories they weave through their art. The goal is to uplift their narratives of culture\, family\, beauty\, and resilience to create a network that empowers living stories and heals elements of the past. \n\n\n\nSchedule: https://www.therootexperience.org/schedule-2023

SUMMARY:Jewish Cultural Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Spokane Area Jewish Family Services is pleased to present our 18th annual Spokane Jewish Cultural Film Festival! Since 2005\, JFS has brought international films to Spokane that share Jewish life and culture with the community. Our upcoming festival\, however\, will be unprecedented: We’re going hybrid!  \n\n\n\nThe festival will take place Feb. 17-27\, 2022\, and will be presented in a “hybrid” format\, provided COVID-19 conditions at the time allow for it. This means opening and closing screenings in person (with precautions in place) at Wolff Auditorium (in Gonzaga University’s Jepson Center) as well as virtual access to all films and numerous programs (such as filmmaker Q&As). It is worth noting that most films in the festival are geoblocked (geographically restricted)\, as required by the distributors\, to the Greater Spokane Area (Spokane-Coeur d’Alene metro\, Stevens County\, the Palouse). If you are unsure about whether your location falls within the GSA\, please don’t hesitate to ask. We can make a limited number of geoblocking exceptions\, on most films\, for family members of GSA residents whose live elsewhere. And the screening package that includes American Birthright and A Jew Walks Into a Bar is not currently geoblocked.

SUMMARY:SBFF REMIX
DESCRIPTION:From the 206 to the 509! \n\n\n\nA free event celebrating Black filmmakers and storytellers with a special screening of short films that were part of Seattle Black Film Festival 2021. Stick around afterward to chat with the SBFF team and learn more about the Seattle Black Film Festival! Doors at 6 pm\, program at 6:30 pm. \n\n\n\nAbout SBFF: \n\n\n\nEstablished in 2003 by Artistic Director Jacqueline Moscou\, the first Langston Hughes African American Film Festival was a production of the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center\, later known as the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute(LPHAI). From the start\, the Langston Hughes African American Film Festival (LHAAFF) sought to give audiences access to underrepresented perspectives and emerging filmmakers from across the African diaspora. Curator Zola Mumford researched and programmed films from many different countries and genres and invited Karen Toering\, a media producer and a leader in nonprofit arts and funding organizations\, to join the festival in 2004. With Toering as Program Director\, the LHAAFF grew from three days of films and discussions to nine.

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:Spokane Jewish Cultural Film Festival 2020\nJan. 30 and Feb. 1-2\, 2020\nJepson Center\, Gonzaga University\nMap & Directions\nAs the only annual Jewish cultural event in our region that is completely open to the public\, SJCFF brings acclaimed international films to Spokane that share Jewish life and culture with the community at large. \n\nThursday\, Jan. 30\, 7 p.m.\nFiddler: A Miracle of Miracles\nRated PG-13 for some thematic elements\nIn English – 92 mins.\nThink you know all there is to know about “Fiddler on the Roof”? Think again! By turns funny\, thought-provoking\, and joyous\, this new documentary explores the origin story behind one of Broadway’s most beloved musicals and its creative roots in early 1960s New York\, when “tradition” was on the wane as gender roles\, sexuality\, race relations\, and religion evolved. Intimate interviews with the show’s creators (and other arts-and-culture luminaries\, like Lin-Manuel Miranda) reveal how “Fiddler” went from an unlikely production to a worldwide phenomenon whose universal themes still resonate today.\nSchedule of events: \n\n6:30 p.m.: Light appetizers served in the Jepson Center lobby\n6:45 p.m.: Meshugga Daddies klezmer band performs selections from “Fiddler on the Roof” and other lively Jewish tunes\n7:15 p.m.: JFS director welcomes audience\n7:22 p.m.: “Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles” co-writer and co-producer Valerie Thomas introduces the film via video call\n7:30 p.m.: Film starts\n9:00p.m.: Film ends\n9:10 p.m.: Raffle for books\, CDs\, and DVDs related to “Fiddler on the Roof”\n\n \n\nSaturday\, Feb. 1\, 7 p.m.\nThe Light of Hope (La llum d’Elna)\nIn Spanish\, Catalan\, and French (English subtitles) – 96 mins.\nIn the early 1940s\, refugees from all over Europe sought shelter in southwest France\, escaping persecution from the Nazis and Franco’s regime in Spain. Among them are countless women\, some pregnant\, and their small children. Young Red Cross nurse Elisabeth Eidenbenz transforms an old villa into a birth clinic\, saving mothers and children alike from certain death. But soon authorities in Nazi-occupied France demand that she hand over all Jewish refugees and their children. Based on a true story\, “The Light of Hope” offers a vivid and inspiring look at a largely untold chapter of Jewish (and world) history. Film introduced by Natalia Ruiz-Rubio\, Spanish program director at Eastern Washington University. \n \n\nSunday\, Feb. 2\, 2 p.m.\nThe Unorthodox\nIn Hebrew and Yiddish (English subtitles) – 99 mins.\nWho doesn’t love a good underdog story? When Yaakov Cohen’s daughter is expelled from school for ethnic reasons\, he decides to fight back. It’s 1983 and Yaakov\, a printer in Jerusalem\, is just a regular guy. But he does have the will and the passion to take action\, and a belief that he and other Sephardic Jews should be able to hold their heads up high. With two friends\, Yaakov starts the first ethnic political group in Jerusalem\, and it’s characteristic of the people they represent: folks working their way up from the bottom\, full of love for their fellow person\, and animated by a great sense of humor and a whole lot of rage.\nBefore and after the screening\, check out the exhibit “Shalom! Sefarad\,” on loan from the Washington State Jewish Historical Society\, about Sephardic Jews’ path to the Pacific Northwest!

SUMMARY:Best of the Fest – The Guardians
DESCRIPTION:When Rudy and Rennie North retired in Las Vegas\, the couple looked forward to their golden years in their own home. They didn’t expect a state-appointed guardian to control their life savings and separate them from their daughter. Kidnapped from their home and drugged\, they immediately lost their freedom to a stranger. \nDirector Billie Mintz exposes a shockingly corrupt system\, fueled by greed\, that has targeted Baby Boomer wealth. His relentless investigation makes him an advocate and ally\, following numerous families who are fighting to free their parents and bring justice to those who have abused a vulnerable population. Untangling a web of deceit\, it becomes clear there are many more whose voices have been silenced. As an unprecedented portion of the population are about to become senior citizens\, the perils of government programs meant to care for the elderly are brought into sharp focus in this unsettling cautionary tale. \n(Billie Mintz\, Canada\, 104 min) \nFree admission \nScreens with: \nDignity of Risk \nProf Joe\, a geriatrician\, is faced with a difficult decision when he finds that his elderly patient\, Mr Jones\, can no longer live safely at home.\n\n(Prateek Bandopadhayay\, Jeremy Ley\, and Joseph Ibrahim\, Australia\, 15 min)
